Zermatt in SUMMER – 5 things to do!

SUMMER SKI!

Didn’t get enough of the white stuff in winter? Then Zermatt can answer your desire by providing 21 kms of prepared pistes on the Theodul Glacier set at 3886 m. Whisk yourself up to the Summer Ski Area at Klein Matterhorn, via the amazing 3S gondola, and ski down to the Italian border to take an expresso! The summer snowpark provides an adrenalin adventure with the kickers and jumps for both skiers & snowboarders. Ski with World Cup racers! – the glacier is a favoured training area for many teams, and you can watch in awe from the side of the training pistes.

MOUNTAIN BIKING

Zermatt is preparing more and more specialized bike trails every summer, you can go up, or you can go down (usually much quicker!). From the Flow Trails, Alm to Zermatt (Moos Trail) and on Sunnegga to the marked downhill trails on Gornergrat, you can get your fix of speed. There are many kms of ‘cross country’ mountain bike trails, set amongst the stunning alpine landscape of the mountains surrounding Zermatt. You can even experience ‘heli-biking’, WOW! How about booking a mountain bike guide to get the best experience?

HIKING

Perhaps a more traditional alpine pass time, and almost a national sport among the Swiss, there are 400 kms of hiking trails in and around Zermatt. From gentle paths above the village to the high alpine glacier routes there really is something for every ability and age. How about following one of the themed trails, for example the Gourmet Walk or 5 Lakes Walk. For something spectacular, and obviously with the appropriate training (with a mountain guide), you can tackle the famous Matterhorn or Monte Rosa – an experience which will never be forgotten!

MUSIC IN THE MOUNTAINS

This summer the famous Zermatt Unplugged festival is organizing two weekend ‘mini festivals’. These will take the form of a series of concerts over the weekends of 15 – 18th and 22nd – 25th July 2021. You will be able to attend various gigs around the village and mountain locations, set amongst nature listening to amazing acoustic music. The names of the artists playing have yet to be released, so watch this space – you never know who you might bump into! For the more classically minded there is the Zermatt Music Festival between 08-19th Sept. Members of the Berlin Philharmonic orchestra take residence in Zermatt and perform concerts in different locations, from the small chapel at Riffelalp to the large church in town.

ZOOOM!

The brand-new multimedia experience will amaze you at 3100m! Take the incredibly scenic Gornergrat train ride from Zermatt, which over approx. 40 minutes winds its way through the larch forests above Zermatt and on up to Gornergrat. Here, in the former ‘Hohtälli’ cable car station the new Zooom experience awaits. Virtual paragliding with 3D glasses, 4 season virtual journey on the Matterhorn to periscopes giving you an up close and personal view of the Matterhorn – the latest technology is now available to experience. Whilst you are there take the short walk up to the viewing area above Gornergrat and stand in wonder at the 29 peaks over 4000 metres and may be you’ll get to see the wonderful Steinbocks which come to visit!
