Zermatt. Where to start? The village stole my heart within hours of first arriving, 10 years ago. I never left. It really is a village that keeps on giving. Aside from the quaintness and charm, the ever present majestic Matterhorn, and the quiet buzz of a ‘tiny city’ that rarely sleeps, it is steeped in history and brimming with beauty of all sizes, shapes and styles. All in perfect harmony.
I will leave the exploring of history to you for when you visit, but for now I will offer you some small insight into why Zermatt is one for the bucket list. Why you should never miss an opportunity to come.
Zermatt is a charming car free village set high in the Swiss Alps at 1620 meters above sea level. Summers are simply bursting with colour and nature, Winters fresh, white and quite simply magical. A true-to-life Winter Wonderland you probably always thought was only in your dreams..
While cars are not permitted, there is an abundance of options to make your way around should your legs refuse to co-operate, retaining their energy for the slopes. Bicycles, of the manual and electric kind, are available to rent, electric Ski busses are regular and prompt, and the small (yet Tardis like) electro taxis are on hand every second of the day. For the days you wish to explore the town you may wander aimlessly, dipping in and out of boutique stores and high end jewellery and watch establishments… and with an abundance of cafes, bars and restaurants to frequent (many of the latter gaining Gault Milau and Michelin Stars) you are spoilt for choice with refreshments.
Zermatt has activities a plenty throughout the year, adapting to the seasons with ease. Tennis and volley ball courts become ice skating and curling rinks… running, hiking and mountain bike trails become toboggan, ski and snowboarding routes… Lakes turn into ski areas or simple places of natural winter beauty.
It therefore comes as no surprise that Zermatt has, once again, won Best Ski Resort 2020, awarded by the renowned body, ‘Best Ski Resort’, who have established themselves as one of the most significant periodical surveys of the Alps, reporting on issues such as quality and guest satisfaction. Zermatt has in fact consistently been in the top 5 since the surveys began, winning 3 of the last 5 bi-annual awards. I’m not sure that accolade can be beaten.
